Setting Family Goals During Winter

This post has been sponsored by Nature Valley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every January I find myself wanting to organize, simplify and make more healthy choices. The holidays bring with them so much stuff and not to mention poor eating habits! Not just for me, but for my entire family. January is a good time to kick unhealthy habits and organize and simplify things at home. We also want to find ways (albeit creative ways in the winter months) to be active as a family. We have partnered with Nature Valley today to share some of our strategies to how we are making healthy choices as a family this winter and setting family goals!

  1. Dance Parties – is there anything better than a family dance party?! The kids just love to turn down the lights and turn up the music, so why not join them! This is a fun activity to get the body moving and have fun as a family.
  2. Family Hikes – We love hiking as a family. Some of our most favorite days in the Bay Area were hiking along the coast. We have started a little family notebook to keep track of new hiking trails in Indianapolis that we have hiked or want to hike. Hiking as a family is such a great way to be active but also such a great time to be in nature, away from technology and other distractions. We are loving the new Nature Valley Layered Granola Bars and fruit for the hikes. We are obsessed with the Almond Butter Chocolate flavor in the bars and the new SoftBaked Filled Squares Cocoa Peanut Butter flavor. So good and so easy (They also have peanut butter chocolate in the layered bars and honey peanut butter in the baked filled squares if that’s more your speed!).
  3. Water Challenge – This year we have challenged each other to drink more water!

  1. Bike Rides – when weather permits, get outside for a bike ride!
  2. Neighborhood Walks – again, when weather permits – get outside for a stroll around the neighborhood. I often get out for a walk to move my bones in the midst of the work day. This winter we are bundling up for a quick 20 or 30 minute walk to get fresh air!
  3. Cooking Together – This is something that we are really excited about. We want our girls to “want” to help in the kitchen. We have been having them help make dinner and even help with menu planning.
  4. Creative Meals – Give a list of ingredients and see what can happen! For example, carrots, green beans and chicken. This list turned out to be a tasty stir fry!
  5. Ski Time – Melissa and her family go skiing every weekend! Calla is on ski team and is awesome! They love to ski together as a family on Sundays.
  6. Cross Country Skiing – This is such a workout and the girls love it. We do too!
  7. Healthy Snacking – During the holidays it is so easy to make sugary snacking choices. But now, it is all about fresh fruit and veggies for snacks! I like to keep some Nature Valley bars, water bottles and dried fruit in the car while running around between ball games, practices and play practice. Plus, they are delicious and my kids love them.
