DIY Paper Bag Stars are hot again this year for handmade holiday decorations. We made a new spin on the classic paper star using white lunch bags instead of brown paper bags.

A little dip dye magic and you have a whole new look for a pretty snowflake look for holiday decorations! We absolutely love how they turned out.

What you need to make paper bag stars

It is incredibly simple – you need DIY Paper Bag Stars! You can find white paper bags at Walmart or amazon. Grab some tan color Rit Dye and a plastic tub.

What kind of glue to use for paper bag stars

A hot glue gun works best. We love this low/high temp glue gun, as the low temp is all you need for this DIY project. The glue gun dries so quickly, so you can whip out tons of stars in no time.

How to hang paper bag stars

A few different ways to hang the stars:

  • Little command hooks are great! You can slip the stars onto the hooks on one of the holes that you had cut in the bag.
  • Sticky tack also works well.
  • Tiny nails or thumb tacks
  • Slip some thread through one of the openings and tape to wall.

  2. Next choose a pattern. You will need 7 bags to make a star. We used pinking shears to create a zig zag look at the edges. See images for the two patterns we used. paper bag star patterns
  3. Cut all 7 bags with the same patter.
  4. Add a hole punch for more detail! paper bag star
  5. Lay the bag flat, with the smooth part facing up. Add a "T" of glue and lay the next bag on top. how to make paper bag stars
  6. After glueing the 7 bags, add glue to the front of bag and pull the last and first bag together. I like to slide my hands inside those bags to pull together. paper bag stars
  7. Tape onto the wall using scoth tape or my personal favorite - sticky tac

Notes

You can also find colored paper bags at many large craft stores. This would be a fun way to decorate for a birthday party with a fun color theme. How fun would it be for a baby shower as well with pastel colored bags!?
