DIY Fabric Lined Glass Plates
Creating simple, lovely and one-of-a-kind gifts is our favorite way to give. If you have a stash of beautiful patterned fabrics and some decoupage, you can create this Mother’s Day handmade gift.
Mother’s Day crafts make the most thoughtful gift. From kids’ crafts to crafts that you can make yourself are such a sweet and personal way to thank a mom.
DIY Fabric Lined Glass Plates
We used glass plates, patterned fabrics from minted and our trusty (dishwasher safe) Mod Podge to turn the everyday salad plate into something special. The dishwasher safe Mod Podge adheres the fabric to the back side of the glass plate – so you can see the pretty fabric and be food safe!
You can choose any fabric, but I recommend a printed cotton. Choose your mom’s favorite colors or flowers to make a set of plates. I would recommend hand washing the plates.
If you are looking for other handmade Mother’s Day gift ideas – we adore this DIY Fabric Lined Wood Tray project from a few years back. I just made one for our mom’s birthday this year.
How to make fabric lined plates
Supplies
- Glass plates (we used these), but you can also find them on amazon
- Mod Podge (use dishwasher safe Mod Podge)
- Cotton fabric (we used fabric from minted which they no longer sell) – but I am in love with this block print fabric that would look great!
- Sponge brushes
- Scissors
This is a super simple project that the kids could help make as well. First you need to trace the fabric around the plate. Simply flip the plate over onto the back side of fabric and trace with a pencil.
Next cut the fabric. We recommend cutting a tad bit bigger than the circle you traced. This way you can trim the excess after you adhere to plate.
Now you can add a layer of mod podge onto the the BACK side of the plate. Then gently place fabric onto the glue. You will be placing the “right side” (printed side” to the bottom of plate so that the patterned side is facing up.
Allow to dry for 20 minutes and then add a thing coat of mod podge to the fabric. Smooth out any air bubbles. Allow to dry.
Trim any excess fabric from edges. Add a thin coal of mod podge to seal the edges.
Allow to dry completely (overnight).
Hand wash.
