The Importance of Getting Outside

Sledding with the kids and the importance of getting outside with the Trust for Public Land.

Get outside. Every day. If it’s a quick walk in the woods, taking the girls sledding before nap time or a weekend camping trip, I try my hardest to get outside every day. Whether it’s getting out for an urban hike on the weekends, exploring a national park or simply taking the kids to a new playground, you’re getting outside, too. Today, we’re so pleased to be partnering with the Trust for Public Land, a non profit organization leading the charge on protecting open spaces and creating new parks for communities to enjoy.

In the hustle and bustle of life we all need to take sanity breaks – time to catch up with our own thoughts or time to connect with our partner or kiddos without distraction. This month, I’m feeling like I need a few more sanity breaks than ever. The holidays, Poppy’s birthday this weekend and not to mention a busy time for the site. So I’m taking the time each day to get outside, breathe in some fresh air and let go of my stress. And I’m trying to pass on this practice to my two little girls. It’s important to let go of the chaos and clutter and get outside.

Going for a winter walk in Crested Butte, Colorado

I live in Crested Butte, Colorado, one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Trust for Public Land has helped protect some of our pristine open space. I know I’m so fortunate to live in this gorgeous mountain town and I get to experience natural beauty out my door, but I still feel the pull to get in the middle of nature like the rest of us. It’s quiet out there, the perfect kind of quiet. It’s inspirational. In fact some of my best creative brainstorming happens when I’m on a hike. It’s healthy. Studies continue to show the benefits of spending time outside for your wellbeing.

I want these open spaces, parks and playgrounds to be here for my family for generations to come. These places are too special to lose. The Trust for Public Land is inviting us to make a TPL Postcard as part of the #OurLand movement and share why nature matters to you. The TPL’s mission is simple, they want to give more people more places to spend the best part of their day.

I know the best part of my day today was getting out into the open with Poppy, her sled and her little training skis. It didn’t matter that is was overcast and gray, it was perfect. Free of distractions, screens and phones ringing. It was just us.
