I fell head over heels for this floral fabric the minute I saw it. I knew I had to make something with it that I could enjoy all the time. So, I made a simple, practical and beautiful wood tray lined in the floral fabric.

What kind of fabric to use

We love a handmade gift like this because you can make it special and sentimental. You could use a vintage tablecloth piece or tea towel of your grandmothers. Or use an old pillow case fabric. Fabric can also be selected by a color palette that the person you are gifting loves.

How to make this DIY Fabric Lined Tray

  1. Determine if you want to keep the wood tray in the natural wood color. If you want, you can stain or paint it. I would recommend doing this before you adhere the fabric to the tray. I kept my tray the natural light wood color.
  2. If you stain or paint the tray, allow it to dry for a few days.
  3. Now prep the fabric. Cut the fabric to the size of the inside of the tray (with really sharp good scissors) so you do not cause a lot of fray on the edges.
  4. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the wood tray. Gently and carefully lay the fabric onto the tray. You can use your fingers or a library or credit card to smooth out any bubbles.
  5. Allow to dry. Then add a thin coat of Mod Podge to the top of fabric. Repeat this a few times. Allow to dry in between coats.

The tray makes for a perfect summer serving piece. It would also add such a bright pop of color and pattern to a coffee table.
